The Last Polo Match

Last Sunday marked the last Greenwich polo match of the season, and let me just say…it was an event to remember.

We arrived at our friends house to find a big, white school bus on the lawn, decked out in nautical flags and american flags. This was to be our ride with our friend Sam at the helm.

We packed the bus with tables, chairs, coolers, blankets, speakers, food, and tons of booze and set out for the match hours early to tailgate. Rolling in, we got plenty of stares but we didn’t care. It’s the last of the season – we were going out with a bang.

After the match, we went to the J House in Greenwich, where we continued to drink in the cabanas by the pool until closing time. At one point, I got pushed into the pool with my clothes and shoes on. I still can’t figure out who did it – I clearly have sneaky friends.

It was a bittersweet day, because it really marked the end of summer. It was our last night to go crazy and just enjoy the sun and our sundresses and hanging out pool-side. The next day was exceptionally cold, just adding to the feeling that this was the end of a chapter. Bring on fall!

Polo

Last Sunday, my friends and I headed back to CT for a polo match between Cinque Terre and Heathcote at the Greenwich Polo Club. It’s always great to get out of the city and this was no exception.

We put on our favorite sun dresses (think: Lilly Pulitzer), plopped our big sunhats on our heads, and set up a tailgate picnic right along the edge of the field. With coolers full of beer and 12 bottles of champagne in tow we had plenty to keep us entertained before the match started. We spent the morning making an entire table worth of delicious snacks – sweet potato hummus, watermelon, bruschetta, stuffed peppers, cookies, etc.

Little kids were running around in mini Lilly dresses, and bowties and Nantucket reds. There were puppies everywhere, even chocolate and yellow lab puppies there for match-goers to play with. At the half-time, spectators are encouraged to rush out onto the field and in a tradition known as “divot stomping”, to fill in the divots made by the polo player’s mallets.

After the match, we headed back to Katie’s house, sunburnt and buzzed, to beat the heat in her pool. We finished the night at Post Corner Pizza in Darien (a staple of our childhood).

Unfortunately, the Greenwich Polo Club does not host any more matches for a month, but we already have the rest marked down in our calendar, come September.
