Polo

Last Sunday, my friends and I headed back to CT for a polo match between Cinque Terre and Heathcote at the Greenwich Polo Club. It’s always great to get out of the city and this was no exception.

We put on our favorite sun dresses (think: Lilly Pulitzer), plopped our big sunhats on our heads, and set up a tailgate picnic right along the edge of the field. With coolers full of beer and 12 bottles of champagne in tow we had plenty to keep us entertained before the match started. We spent the morning making an entire table worth of delicious snacks – sweet potato hummus, watermelon, bruschetta, stuffed peppers, cookies, etc.

Little kids were running around in mini Lilly dresses, and bowties and Nantucket reds. There were puppies everywhere, even chocolate and yellow lab puppies there for match-goers to play with. At the half-time, spectators are encouraged to rush out onto the field and in a tradition known as “divot stomping”, to fill in the divots made by the polo player’s mallets.

After the match, we headed back to Katie’s house, sunburnt and buzzed, to beat the heat in her pool. We finished the night at Post Corner Pizza in Darien (a staple of our childhood).

Unfortunately, the Greenwich Polo Club does not host any more matches for a month, but we already have the rest marked down in our calendar, come September.
